I recently did some work on care for the caregivers with home based care workers in Knysna, South Africa. I think vicarious trauma is one of the key issues that we have to consider in building sustainable home-based care systems. The study was a comparative outcome study with 40 careworkers. It clearly shows that some kinds of care (body based techniques, psychosocial training, and individual counselling) are helpful while others are not (drumming and group debriefing/counselling). The work also demonstrates the importance of differentiating between vicarious trauma/compassion fatigue and burnout. For the whole report and other details looks at www.craighigsonsmith.com.

Charlene,
I know that you were a blessing to those in Mgona. They are the people forgotten by everyone but Jesus and you became his hands and feet when you prayed with them.
